SCULPTURE

In the video above, a scan converted into a 3D digital model, and the model was used to mill this larger-than-life sculpture – which then became a mold for a stuntman driver mask.

Hardwood

As a test project, 5AXISMAKER downloaded a free 3D model of a 1778 bust of American founding father Benjamin Franklin, currently in the Metropolitan Museum in New York City.

The 3D model was then used by our computer-controlled 5-axis milling machine to create a bust of Franklin in sapele wood, similar to mahogany.

Lost Wax Casting

Using the same 3D model as for the wooden Franklin (above), this bust was milled by our machine out of a block of wax. Silicon was then wrapped around the wax bust, and, after the silicon hardened, molten brass was poured inside – melting the wax and creating a brass Franklin bust in a process called “lost wax casting.”
